INAPA’s $113 Million sewage system initiative in Higüey

La Altagracia, Higüey.- The executive director of the National Institute of Drinking Water and Sewage (INAPA), Wellington Arnaud, conducted a public consultation in Higüey, La Altagracia province, to introduce the construction of a sewage system as part of the Universal Sanitation Program in Coastal Localities and Tourist Areas of the Dominican Republic.

This project, backed by a $113 million investment from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), aims to address crucial sanitation needs in the region. Arnaud emphasized the importance of community involvement in such endeavors, stating, “With this activity, we aim to familiarize you with the project and garner your support, as the social aspect is crucial in such works.”

Arnaud also commended President Luis Abinader for his dedication to advancing this initiative, affirming, “Thanks to President Luis Abinader’s commitment, we are taking this initial step towards a healthier future for the population of Higüey.”

The project entails the construction of a sewage network, four pumping stations, and a treatment plant. Notably, microtunnels will be utilized along main avenues to minimize disruptions to traffic and avoid the need for street excavation.

The consultation, held at the auditorium of the Autonomous University of Santo Domingo (UASD) in Higüey, saw the participation of local authorities, civil society representatives, community members, and members of the INAPA technical team.
