Dominican presidential candidates affirm country’s right to deport undocumented immigrants

Santo Domingo.- The presidential candidates representing the majority parties in the Dominican Republic have affirmed the country’s right to deport undocumented immigrants, despite international calls to halt repatriations of Haitians.

During an unprecedented presidential debate organized by the National Association of Young Entrepreneurs (ANJE) ahead of the upcoming May elections, Luis Abinader of the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) asserted, “We will continue to deport anyone who is illegal because not doing so would be anarchy.” Abinader, the incumbent president seeking a second term, defended the construction of a border fence with Haiti, citing the serious challenges facing the neighboring nation.

Former president Leonel Fernández, representing the People’s Force party, echoed Abinader’s stance, emphasizing the need to enforce the law regarding illegal immigration while respecting human rights. Fernández emphasized the sovereign right of each country to deport individuals who do not comply with immigration laws, criticizing international organizations for their criticism of the Dominican Republic’s repatriation efforts.

Abel Martínez of the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) expressed support for the border fence, advocating for it to serve as an economic barrier to assist Dominicans living in border provinces. Martínez highlighted the current crisis in Haiti as a threat to Dominican sovereignty and security.

Dominicans are set to cast their votes on May 19 to elect the next president, deputies, and senators. If a runoff election is required, it will take place on June 30, according to the schedule set by the Central Electoral Board.
